How to become a hairstylist in Connecticut

Hairstylists and cosmetologists combine their creativity and eye for the latest trends with a friendly personality to provide hair, skin and nail services. They apply their talent and skills to enhance each of their clients’ appearance which can translate into a continuous source of income and self satisfaction in making someone feel better about themselves.

So how do you get started in a new career as a hairstylist?

The first step is to have a passion for hairstyling and cosmetology! It’s a career that allows creative expression, offers independence, and keeps you moving. Hairstylists shampoo, cut, color and style hair, and make hair care recommendations to clients.

A license is needed to work as a hairstylist, or cosmetologist, so the next step is to get your training by completing a state-approved cosmetology program. In Connecticut, students in the 12-month Cosmetology program at Porter and Chester Institute’s Rocky Hill campus learn, haircoloring, texturizing services, hairstyling, haircutting, facials, manicures and pedicures and much more. PCI’s experienced, qualified instructors provide the individual attention for students as their skills develop so that they can enter the field with knowledge and confidence needed to be successful in the cosmetology field. Graduates are prepared to sit for the Cosmetology license exam required by the Connecticut Department of Public Health.

Passing the Cosmetology license exam is the last step to complete before starting a career as a licensed hairdresser. The Connecticut Department of Public Health partners with Prometric to conduct their exams. The Connecticut Cosmetology Examination is a closed-book exam that consists of 100 multiple-choice questions and requires a score of 70% or better to pass!
