Steps to Take to Become an HVACR Technician in Connecticut
Step 1:
Decide if this is the career for you. HVACR technicians install, maintain, and repair heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems. This is an active career path where technicians can find hands-on work in a wide range of settings and weather conditions. Most work full-time with occasional evening or weekend shifts.
Step 2:
Since most HVACR employers prefer applicants who have completed formal training or an apprenticeship, your next step is to find a postsecondary institution that offers an HVACR program. These programs can take between 6 months to 2 years to complete, leading to a certificate, diploma or degree. A good HVACR program will provide intensive training on the service, installation and repair of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Step 3:
Some states including Connecticut require HVACR technicians to be licensed. Connecticut HVAC Journeyperson Licenses are issued by the Department of Consumer Protection. A journeyperson works under a licensed HVAC contractor in a specific area of the industry as determined by the type of specialty license(s) are obtained. Many HVACR training programs in Connecticut are designed to prepare graduates for licensing exams.

With an HVACR education and journeyperson licensing under your belt, you're ready to find employment as an HVACR technician!
