Overcoming fear to start your career journey

At Porter and Chester Institute, we welcome a new crop of adult learners and recent high school graduates through our doors several times each year. These students, varying in age, background, and interests, are taking the first step toward a shared goal of employment in a new career. For many of them, starting their journey did not come without first overcoming their greatest obstacle: fear.

"The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."
— Nelson Mandela

It's natural for fear and anxiety to arise when considering a life change. Getting the education and training you need to start a new career is not a decision to take lightly. Many of our students conquered one or more of the following fears before embarking on their career training journey.

Their fear: Fitting in
What they found: The student body at Porter and Chester Institute is a diverse group. They share the same goal and often support each other and make friends across varying ages, backgrounds and interests.

Their fear: Paying for school
What they found: Our team of Educational Funding Specialists helps students find all the resources that might be available to them. There are federal, institutional and private programs that can make career training more affordable. All possibilities are explored including grants, scholarships, and more.

Their fear: Workload
What they found: At Porter and Chester Institute students can schedule classes around their commitments. Many programs offer day and night options to fit the schedules of students with all needs, including those holding full or part time jobs.

Their fear: Failure
What they found: Everyone hates to fail, but we know that a fear of failure can hold us back from achieving our goals. At PCI, students quickly find themselves engaged in their program's subject matter through our hands-on approach to career training. Learning-by-doing keeps students active and they build confidence and courage with each success.

Their fear: Finding the right school
What they found: At Porter and Chester Institute, we realize the decision of where to get an education is one of the most important you'll ever make. Our Career Program Specialists help our students explore their options and find a career that's the right fit. We work with them through the entire admissions process to make sure they're the right fit for us!

"To overcome fear, here's all you have to do: realize the fear is there and do the action you fear anyway."
— Peter McWilliams
